OMW Loose on the Open Roads of Texas: Part II

This is what we have been waiting for. Spring time in Texas means beautiful weather and bike racing weekends OMW style!! Unlike the miserable weather we got at the Dripping Springs Mellow Johnnys race, Race #3 and #4 were held under clear blue Texas skiesRace #3 of the TMBRA Texas State Championship Series was at the Pace Bend Race Festival at Pace Bend Park on Lake Travis just outside of Austin, Texas. This course is one of my favorites of the series. The course is on the hillside overlooking the Lake. It has a great combination of technical sections, rock gardens, and fast singletrack. It also has a nice Expo area where we establish the Team area to enjoy all the festivities. Everyone knows we are there with the OMW banner, bike stable, and jammin cooler cranked to 11!! 2014 TMBRA race season underway, OMW loose on the open roads of Texas!! Part 1:

post-terlingua-2014Spring time is here. Its about time. We’ve had our fun over the winter including our yearly pilgrimage to the Chihuahuan desert in far west Texas. Desert miles laid down and Starlight margaritas had by all. But the time has come for weekend warriors to get on race lines all over the great State of Texas!!

Race #1 went down Feb 9th at Rocky hill ranch in Smithville, Tx. Our good friend and OMW honorary member Paul Uhl put on a great season opener just like we knew he would. Paul had the course set up just right for all the racers as well as for the spectators to enjoy all the action. The biggest action of the weekend, besides the action at the OMW Team canopy, was Pauls son, Tristan Uhl, winning the Pro/Cat 1 Open race in commanding style. Great job Tristan! OMW racing made a good weekend of it as well. Local guy Rob Remlinger threw down an 8th place on his home course in the Cat 2/3 Singlespeed group. Gerad Dambrosia came in 12th place in Cat 1 30-39. Don Schwieters came in 13 place in Cat 2 50+. And Jay Lopez got 17th place in Cat 2 19-29. Its always a good time at Rocky Hill Ranch.

2013 XC Season in the Bag. Next up: Winter training and other Shenanigans for the OMW Crew!

post-ending2013Well it was an interesting……ly long  2013 XC race season culminating at Race #14, The Tyler Speedwaves Race in Tyler, Texas on October 13th, 2013. The new race schedule threw a few wrinkles into our usual good times but we still managed to knock out some top 10 overalls and still fit in some good old fashioned OMW MAYHEM. Thank goodness that the powers that be, have in their infinite wisdom, decided to go back to the Spring series/Fall series format for 2014.  But I digress….

OMW racing had a great 2013 race season. We had 10 guys qualified for the overall classifications. 4 of those guys made the top 10 in their groups. The other 6 finished in the top 30 in their groups:

Rob Remlinger 6th place– Cat 2/3 SS men

Gregg Colvin 7th place– Cat 2/3 SS men

Don Schwieters 8th place– Cat 2 50+

Jay Lopez 10th place– Cat 2 men 19-29

Congratulations guys!! Great job racing 14 races over a 6 month time period. Cant forget the other knuckleheads- Allen Brady 14th place Cat 2 men 45-49, Gerad Dambrosia 16th place Cat 1 30-39, Lance Hyde 20th place Cat 2 30-34, Jeff Cairnes 21st Cat 2/3 SS, Dan Hickman 23rd place Cat 2 45-49, and Alfredo Lopez 28th place Cat 2 30-34.

With the XC season over our usual focus becomes hand picking events to do for kicks and giggles and then start to prepare for the upcoming Spring series. It has come to our attention that the format of 6 hour, 12 hour, or 24 hour races fits our race style oh so nicely.  We want to ride all day and get our party on at the same time!! Throw in some night riding and we cant stop smiling! So hope to see you out for some of those long weekends.

Before I sign off, let me remind everyone that the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest is on the schedule once again for Presidents day weekend 2014!! Set your calendars now for February13-15th, 2014 for “Another awesome three-day Mountainbike Festival” out in the Big Bend National park and Big Bend Ranch State Park areas . Check out for more info as it becomes available. See you at the races or out in Big Country!!

OMW Bitches!!

Summer Break 2013- TMBRA may not like the heat but OMW does. Staying busy during the summer break.

post-summer2013Strange times in Texas. The Texas State MTB Championship series has a new format this year. It has gone from an 8 race series between February and May to a 14 race series between February and October (with no races June-August). The powers that be thought this might be a good idea. I think the Fall series races just got tired of being the red headed step child of the spring series. I also think the decision makers have gone overboard trying to schedule a Marathon series overlapping the Fall series and I hear they wanna add cyclocross in there too. What?? Are we in Canada all of a sudden??!!

I digress. Just because TMBRA thinks its too hot to race OMW says bring the heat. Most of us are still getting our miles in shredding the local trails but others are finding other fun ways to keep the rubber on the trails. Gerad Dambrosia raced the local Dirt Remedy short track race series out at the Emma Long Motorcycle Park in Austin, Texas. Rob Remlinger is off in Golden Lake, California this summer riding his bike in the mountains and will finish his summer off riding in the Downieville Classic. Allen Brady has been working on his place in Crested Butte, Colorado and getting in some quality miles riding the awesome mountain trails with his 2 boys. The rest of us are keeping it real locally with our regular TGIF ride at Walnut Creek or crushing other local trails. Come join us.

Austin Rattler 100 Race Report: Rocky Hill Ranch, Smithville, Tx. 04/14/13. (A Leadville 100 Race Qualifier)

Austin Rattler 100 Race Report

A Rattler will bite if provoked and to borrow a line from one of our favorite bands “It aint gonna suck itself”.  It was a calm and cool morning, sun coming up, perfect day for a 100k race as Don and Gerad were waiting in line for their race packets and timing chips as some dudes from Chicago, IL. complemented us on our kits and asked what does OMW mean?  Well I’m glad you asked …”Outta My Way with my 29 inch wheels and 16oz tall dog in my hand” I cheerfully replied, so if you see us on the trail and we’re coming in hot, you know what to do.  We get our goody bags and then we start setting up our feed zone and talking to some of the other racers including local favorite Tristan Uhl, trying to get some tips from the fastest man in town.  (I can’t tell you what he told me or I have to kill you).  Don and Gerad get on the start line, midway back in a field of 500+ racers with Jimmy Hendrix playing the national anthem over the PA system. It’s go time!  Nice, easy start with Don and Gerad riding together until we hit Fat Chucks climb then it’s enough of the fun and games and time to get on board the pain train.  This year’s course was a 15.5 mile loop of mostly jeep road/double track with a couple sections of prime RHR single track which is where I was able to close small gaps and put a hurtin’ on the others.  Out on the open jeep roads it was pace lines trying to conserve energy and survive.  Fortunately we had Rob and Izzy out in an open field keeping it real with some tunes on 11, drinking beers (at 9am), yelling at all the racers and Izzy almost taking out one of the top pros with a chair.

2013 TMBRA Series Update: OMW singlespeeders are saving the day!

It has been a whirlwind of a season to this date. The 2013 Texas State Championship Series began in early February and as of this past weekend we are already 5 races into it. We did 4 weekends in a row before getting a weekend off. First, we went to Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville, Tx. for race #1.  The next weekend some of us went to Terlingua, Tx  for the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest and the rest went to race #2 in Waco, Tx. Next, we all showed up in Comfort, Tx. at Flat Rock Ranch for race #3, then we were off to Dripping Springs, Tx. and Flat Creek Crossing for race #4 (and to watch the domestic Pro’s begin the XCT Pro season).  After our first weekend off in a month it was off to Abilene, Tx.  for race #5.  That was a lot of miles on the road but you know how we like to ride our bikes all over the great state of Texas!! And we like to have a good time doing it!! oh yeah! Any way, there’s only 9 more to go!! Lets take this to a whole nutha level!

OMW Singlespeeders are saving the day this season. Nick Carter has moved up to the Singlespeed Open Category this year and is taking some names and kicking some asses!!! Rob Remlinger and Gregg Colvin are riding in the front of the pack in Cat 2/3 Singlespeed as well! The rest of us are scattered about in our various categories about to come in hot for the mid season push to the front.

2013 Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest- OMW Spring Training Excursion.

If you’ve never been out to Big Bend National and State Park for the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest then start making plans for next year people!  OMW just got back from another weekend of riding in the desert, partying with great people, and all around good times.  This year saw a reduced crew but that just meant more for us!  It was Dan, Lance, Jay, Gregg and Gerad cruisin down I-10 in the Green Manalishi toward our yearly pilgrimage.  We broke down just outside of Fort Stockton and had to call in for some emergency mechanic magic.  Thankfully they had all the parts!!!  So we’re back up and running in less than 3 hours and will be setting up camp in the dark again this year.  We roll into the campsite and get burgers grillin and our own zip code 78-OMW with the jammin cooler on 11 !  Then some guy in the campsite next to us comes down and asks us to “tone it down”…doesn’t he know who we are?  We’ve been coming here for years people!  Well we sent him right back up the hill with the assurance that we would not be obliging his request and to have a nice night.
